Colour the City is a short film that celebrates Malta’s capital of Valletta, the European Capital of Culture for 2018. Our brief was to build excitement ahead of the 2018 through a film that was equally compelling with and without audio. Valletta is a city of colours: green balconies, red carpets, blue seas. We used colour to tell the story of a city regenerating around a rich and varied history.
Every aspect of this film was localised, from the bespoke dress worn by our model (by Gozitan designer Luke Azzopardi) to the traditional paper kite (from Malta’s last Kitemaster, Lino Psaila) to cameos by the King's Own Band Club, the Kazinska septet and local dancers and skateboarders. Colour the City was intended for a younger audience, so our original song composition, "Feel the Love," balances contemporary sound and Maltese sound, with trumpet performed by a local musician.
Colour the City premiered at the Isle of MTV concert in 2016 to a crowd of over 50,000. Since then, it has aired continuously on Air Malta flights, reaching over 500,000 viewers.
