Thesis Identity for a minimalist Oslo-designed clothing brand

Brief

Thesis is a modern and minimalist clothing brand designed in Oslo. Hangar joined at idea stage, when the brand existed only as a concept. There was no narrative and no visual identity in place.

The objective was to establish a clear foundation from the beginning. Rather than applying aesthetics to an undefined idea, the task was to define a position and build the identity from that structure.

Approach

The starting point was narrative. Hangar worked with the client to articulate why the brand exists and what it stands for. The concept of a thesis as a personal position, not a repetition of existing formulas, became the basis for the identity system.

An early strategic decision was to simplify the name to Thesis as opposed to the early proposed Thesis Oslo. Removing the geographical reference to keep the brand more confident and scalable. Although the location is an integral part to the brand, the name Thesis in isolation was better fitting visually as well as phonetically.

The development of the symbol required careful exploration. The mark needed to feel balanced and minimalist while remaining distinctive and usable across garments, labels, trims and digital environments. Through iteration, a geometric form inspired by the ‘not equal to symbol’ (≠) emerged. Modifications to this symbol reference Oslo’s architectural language, drawing on angled planes and reductive forms. The result is a mark that feels quiet and modern, yet recognisable.

Outcome

The completed identity system comprises a defined brand narrative, a name and logotype, a geometric symbol and supporting typography.

The brand feels minimal and intentional without becoming anonymous. The symbol provides an ownable visual signature while remaining aligned with contemporary Scandinavian aesthetics.

For a clothing brand, identity directly influences manufacturing decisions, labelling, trims and material applications. Establishing this foundation before launch ensured that production and communication decisions are guided by a defined position rather than aesthetic preference alone.

With structure in place, Thesis is now easier to articulate and positioned to grow with consistency across product and brand touch points.
