Brief

Portico is a boutique hotel located in the heart of Mosta, Malta. Positioned as a sanctuary of rest, the project sought to create a hospitality experience that balances architectural heritage with a contemporary outlook.

Hangar was engaged from the outset to develop the naming, positioning, messaging and visual identity for the new venture.

Inscription to Wordmark

The logotype draws inspiration from the stone inscriptions found throughout the basilica. Over time, the recessed letterforms have developed darker tonal variations as a result of age and exposure. This characteristic informed the treatment of the wordmark, translating a subtle architectural detail into a contemporary typographic feature.

Approach

Located adjacent to the Mosta Dome Basilica, the hotel occupies a unique position within one of Malta’s most recognisable settings. While the landmark naturally informed the project, the challenge was to avoid the familiar naming conventions often associated with the area. References to domes, rotundas, religious terminology and derivations of the word Mosta are common within local brands, creating a landscape of predictable and interchangeable identities.

The naming process focused on uncovering a connection that felt both distinctive and authentic to the location. The name Portico was inspired by the prominent portico that defines the unmissable basilica’s façade. Closely tied to the landmark, yet removed from the more obvious references, it provided a name that felt rooted in place while remaining capable of standing on its own.

The concept extended naturally into the brand positioning. As an architectural threshold, a portico represents arrival, transition and shelter. These ideas became central to the hotel’s promise as a sanctuary of rest.

This architectural approach informed the wider identity system. Typography, motifs and colour palettes draw inspiration from details found within the basilica itself, translating historical references into a contemporary hospitality brand.

A hidden Q

While documenting the basilica's inscriptions, we noticed an unusual interpretation of the letter Q hidden among hundreds of carved letterforms. Distinctive in both shape and proportion, it was reinterpreted within the word boutique, creating a subtle typographic reference to the building’s history.

Outcome

The result is an identity shaped by one of Malta’s most recognisable landmarks without being defined by it.

Drawing from the architecture, craftsmanship and visual character of the Mosta Basilica, the brand creates a contemporary hospitality experience that feels connected to its surroundings while maintaining a distinctive voice of its own.

Across naming, positioning, messaging and visual identity, Portico establishes a cohesive foundation that balances heritage and modernity, creating a hospitality brand designed for rest and built for long-term relevance.
